The Heart of the Matter

+++

It is our nature to want to present our best side…on our best day. We strive to look as good as possible and put our best foot forward when we go out in public. We want to look and act our best and to display appropriate social skills.

The outward appearance does not always reflect the inner reality. One can smile and say the right words, yet be contrary inside. We can deceive others and even ourselves with outward behavior and appearance.

As human beings, we judge the outward appearance, even when we do not think we do. We do our best to look beyond the outward appearance, but it still affects our thoughts to some extent. We have a difficult time arriving at the “heart of the matter.”

“Man judges the outward appearance, but God reads the heart.”

It is not our outward presentation, but the presence in our heart that matters to God. It is not who we think we are, but rather who God knows we are that counts.
