…whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:43-45)
Throughout the New Testament, it is easy to find what God expects from Christians without going into theology. These verses are evident and leave no need to wonder what they mean. Much of these instructions will be in the words of Jesus.
The above scripture is clear for those who want to see it. Jesus gave his life a ransom for many, for the sins of the world. Only he could do that, but we, as Christians, may well need to give our life for another or for our faith.
The Gospel of Mark is defined in verse 45 as Mark presents the two-fold focus of Christ’s life; service and sacrifice. What’s a Christian to do? Mark tells you.

Service and sacrifice…hard to follow this instruction sometimes. But I notice that when I serve and when I sacrifice (which is not as often as it should be, I’m sorry to say) I feel good. There is a reward, even here and now, knowing that I’ve helped someone else. ~ Sheila
Our mayor lives this example of Jesus’ life and it is amazing what all has happened to improve things economically, racially, and relationally. Just amazing, and I’m sure it has a lot to do with his servanthood. He’s in his second term so there’s been a little while for these changes to take place. But when someone is in public office who is self-serving and politically motivated its very hard to see progress in those areas. I like this post.
Well said, Butch. You put it so simple, yet so clear.
Blessings ~ Maxi
James the brother of Jesus speaks to this, too.
Not an easy thing to do in our “take care of Number 1″ world, is it? Still, it’s what we’re called to do.
