It is summer. The sun is warm; the days are endless, as my dog and I explore the mysteries of our world. The fields and creeks are our playground. It is the best of times: the very best of times. It is endless summer and forever young.
The childhood days of summer, the carefree days of youth, echo through the years, calling us back to those young beginnings, those timeless moments in our life. Through the wrinkles of the years and the wearing of the miles, we smile, and remember.

Summer days, a little boy and a dog linger on the back roads of my mind. The time was called “forever” and everything was perfect.
The creek seemed as large as any proud river and it belong to us, my dog and me. We explored its shores as far as we could see. The creek became a part of us.
Pal and I lived to be together and to experience each day as it came. We couldn’t wait to get out and going each morning as early as we could.
Summer days pass all too soon, as do boys and dogs, but memories last a lifetime.

I hardly recognize the scene before me. Brambles and weeds have overcome the lane that led to our home. The kids used to play and ride bikes up and down its tire marked path. I listen and hear the sounds of their laughter and play, forever written on the wind.
The lane used to extend a warm invitation, but now gives an unwelcome message to any who pass by. Memories from the past haunt the old place now. Visions in my mind of a place called yesterday.
There have been moments in my life when I wanted time to stop, moments when I knew it could not be any better, but puppies grow to be dogs and little children become adults. Moments become memories as life and time continue their cadence, waiting for no one.

Food on the table, roof over my head, clothes on my back;
I’m doing pretty good, at that.
Doesn’t seem so good by today’s standards…
but then it depends on the yardstick your measuring by…
the yardstick of “wants” or the yardstick of “needs.”
True contentment comes by only one.
