A Back Pocket God

The God of the Bible has become a “back pocket God” to many Christians. He is conveniently there when needed, right next to the credit cards. An all-powerful God has been reduced to “in case of emergency” or “if all else fails.”  Credit cards are reached for before God is called upon. A faith in God’s provisions is professed as the credit card is used to satisfy a want.

 God asks us to trust Him…not our own abilities…not credit cards.

Therefore take no thought, saying,

What shall we eat?

What shall we drink?

Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness;

and all these things shall be added unto you.

(Matthew 6:31-33)

  2. The borrower is slave to the lender. God has already given us everything we need. I want to be a slave for Christ because of what He has provided and paid for.

    Wonderful thoughts, Butch. Love this post. It inspired me to think about a blog post maybe called “911 God” for those folks who only call on him in emergencies.

  4. It’s true, Following after the way of the world makes its easy for believers to put God in their back pocket. We all need to seek him first, putting him in our fore front and not out back pocket.
