The Greater Enemy

Fear of tomorrow or regrets from the past…hard to decide sometimes which is the greater enemy to today. There will always be some regrets in the past and concerns for the future. Yet, we can control neither.

I once heard a man say that it is like having one foot in the past and one foot in the future and by so doing you end up peeing on today. His phrasing may not be so eloquently put, but it certainly paints a realistic picture of how we can trash today by concerns about the past or for the future.

Perhaps the greatest enemy is ourselves. Yet to be free of regrets from the past and fear or concern regarding tomorrow seems as futile as trying to walk on water. Perhaps it’s our focus that needs changing. Perhaps walking on water is possible if only we learn to focus on the One who did.

  1. Trying to get out of our heads is valuable. I read, by some inspirational speaker, “We aren’t our thoughts.” Yes how often our thoughts change our behavior: we want to do a good deed, be kind, welcoming etc but old thoughts, like temptations, force us to freeze up. We aren’t our thoughts: if we could only follow that and do the good we want to do…
