Earthly Possessions

“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

(Matthew 6:21)

Jesus said, “It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.” Surely, He is not saying that the wealthy won’t go to heaven. Perhaps He meant that wealth can be a hindrance to faith. Wealth and possessions can own you if you let them. They can become more important to you than God. Wealth isn’t necessarily a blessing, it can be a curse.

The more you have the less you may rely upon God.

The less you have the more you may blame God.

The wealthy are not blessed with riches anymore than the poor are cursed with poverty. Faith cannot be measured by possessions or the lack thereof, but faith can be affected by wealth or poverty.

The poor have little to rely upon but God, yet they may blame God for their situation. They may cling to even the little that they have. Their prayers may be covetous petitions for wealth and possessions.

Wealthy or Poor…either can be a blessing or a curse.

You came into the world with nothing and you will leave the same way. There should be no assumptions of one’s faith based on being wealthy or poor. In either case, man judges the outward appearance, but God reads the heart. Whether you have much or little, your faith in God should always be first.

…Be honest in your estimate of yourselves, measuring your value by how much faith God has given you. (Romans 12:3 NLT)
